The National Assembly enacted the Defense Research and Development Bureau Act, 2022, and the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retired), has signed it. The Presidency said this advances Section 58(4) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution.
According to a statement released on Wednesday by Senator Babajide Omoworare, Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters, the purpose of the Act is to create the Defense Research and Development Bureau, which will conduct and coordinate effective research and development for the Nigerian Armed Forces.
He said, “The Act provides for a realistic defense policy for basic and applied research on defense items and equipment, initiate and coordinate the scientific, technological and environmental research activities of the Armed Forces, provides strategic direction for self-reliance and security needs, evaluate needs and liaise with private and government research institutions on defense and related items and equipment.”
Three other bills — the National Commission for Refugees Act, the National Tourism Authority Act, and the National Assembly Library Trust Fund Act — were also approved by the president.
To provide a framework for the management, rehabilitation, return, reintegration, and resettlement of victims of displacement, migrants, refugees, and other individuals of concern, the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons Act, 2022 repealed the National Commission for Refugees Act, Cap.
