DOGUWA GETS N500M BAIL, BARRED FROM CONSTITUENCY

Justice Muhammad Nasir Yunus of the Federal High Court, Kano has granted the majority leader of the House of Representatives, Alhassan Garba Ado Doguwa N500 million bail with two reliable sureties in like sum.

The defendant is standing trial on the allegations of criminal offenses bordering on criminal conspiracy, illegal possession of firearms, culpable homicide and breach of public peace.

He pleaded not guilty earlier when he was arraigned before Kano Magistrate court 54.

His attorney, Nuraini Jimoh (SAN), pleaded with the court yesterday to release him on bail, claiming that his client is entitled to a presumption of innocence under section 35, subsection 6, of the Constitution of Nigeria 1999, as amended.

In a decision on the motion, Judge Nasir-Yunusa, the presiding court, granted him bail in the amount of N500 million with two trustworthy sureties.

According to the court, the sureties shall be a first class emir and any senior officer in the civil service.

The court similarly ordered Doguwa to drop his international passport with the court registry pending the trial.

The court also restrained the defendant from going to his constituents during the gubernatorial and state House of Assembly elections billed to be held on March 11, 2023.
