FG EXPRESSES DISPLEASURE OVER UAE’S DECISION ON VISA BAN

Date:

On Monday, The Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, expressed displeasure over UAE’s decision on visa ban for Nigerians, as well as the decision to stop Emirates Airline from flying into Dubai. Governor Emefiele expressed his displeasure at a meeting with the leadership of the House of Representatives, to resolve trapped funds of foreign airlines worth $700 Million, operating in Nigeria.
The CBN Governor said that UAE should not always threaten Nigeria over some disagreements that could be sorted out. Nigeria is a big market that is of great benefit to UAE, and as such, we should not be treated like liabilities or we need them to survive. He further revealed that the Federal Government was adopting measures to ensure the trapped funds of foreign airlines, were disbursed to appropriate countries.
Governor Emefiele explained that the state of global economy was making it difficult to generate foreign exchange, which enables them send money to other countries. He reassured that every fund will be paid. In response to the action of UAE’s Aviation Minister, Hadi Sirika, CBN Governor said that Nigeria does not care if UAE decides to shut her out.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, said that the House was concerned about the issue of trapped funds for foreign airlines and efforts were made to pay the funds to the various countries by December. Mr. Femi urged the International airlines to call off placed restrictions, against Nigerians because the principle of reciprocity requires that Nigerian travellers are also permitted to fly into countries, whose airlines have a large market in her country.
