The Jigawa State Command of the Federal Fire Service has given its residents safety tips to help curb fire disasters as the harmattan season approaches. The tips were given by the command’s spokesman, Mr Habibu Jamilu.
Mr. Jamilu said that the tips were vitally important to help prevent fire disasters during the dry season in houses, offices, markets and other places of public interest.
He said, “The harmattan is a season which occurs between the end of November and the middle of March every year. It is associated with a very high risk of fire outbreak due to low humidity, dryness and fluctuation in temperature. Therefore, there is the need for us to educate Jigawa residents and other Nigerians on the need to be careful while using fire and electricity.”
His tips are:
– Do not leave cooking unattended to
– Do not indiscriminate bush burning
– Do not store inflammable items indoors
– Do not keep gas cylinders indoors
– Have a first aid box handy at home, office and other places
– Have fire-fighting equipment at home, office and other places
– Have fire service emergency phone numbers
He added that it is also very important that children are not allowed to play with fire, while noting that all electrical and electronic appliances be switched off when leaving home, office, market shop and other places.
