The House of Representatives has instructed the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) to make the establishment of mini power grids that will facilitate energy inclusiveness in the rural areas of the country a top priority.
Beni Lar, the chairperson, House of Representatives Committee on Science, Technology and Innovation, made the call during the 2023 budget defence by ECN and other agencies that function under the Ministry of Science and Technology.
She commended the ECN Director General, Prof. Eli Jidere Bala on his plan to make energy efficient LED bulbs for the Nigerian market, especially in rural areas.
Lar made this known at a budget defence session with the management of the agency which is tasked with science and technology research and development.
She said this in reaction to a plea by the Director General of the agency, Mr. Sunday Thomas, who said that the agency is currently top-heavy and bottom-light.
