Co-Host, Australia Book Quarter-Final Spot After Overcoming Denmark

Date:

Australia eased into the quarter-finals of the FIFA Women’s World Cup following a 2-0 win over Denmark at Stadium Australia in Sydney. Caitlin Foord opened the scoring in the first half before Hayley Raso made certain of the victory late in the second half to set up a last-eight meeting against either France or Morocco.

Danish forward, Pernille Harder had an early run and low shot saved by Mackenzie Arnold before Australia took the lead on 29 minutes. Mary Fowler played a superb defense-splitting pass from inside her own half and Foord ran through before finishing low beyond Lene Christensen.

Chances were scarce until Australia extended their lead on 70 minutes when Fowler’s ball into the box was controlled and laid off by Emily van Egmond for Raso to drive home low into the net. Australia’s victory is just their second in the FIFA Women’s World Cup knockout stages.

“I’m really proud. You can’t really beat this feeling. Apart from the Nigeria game, every match has just been awesome. We just want to keep experiencing this more and more. We’ll enjoy this one tonight and then we’ll keep a close eye on France-Morocco tomorrow. But if we play like that, I’m confident we can beat anyone.”
