FIBA Women’s Afrobasket Championship: Nigeria’s D’Tigress Win Fourth Consecutive Title


Nigeria’s female basketball team, D’Tigress has defeated Senegal to win the 2023 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket Championship for the fourth consecutive time. The D’Tigress defeated the 11-time African champions, Senegal 84-74 to claim their sixth championship at the BK Arena in Kigali, Rwanda on Saturday.

The victory means that D’Tigress will now compete for a spot at the women’s basketball event of the 2024 Olympics. Nigeria is now the second side, after Senegal (1974 to 1981), to have won the championship four times in a row. They now have six titles. The team clinched the crown in 2017, 2019, and 2021 before the most recent feat at the BK Arena.

The Lionesses of Senegal have now lost to the D’Tigress in four Afrosbasket finals (2005, 2017, 2019, and 2023). En route to the final of the championship, the D’Tigress overpowered host Rwanda. Before then, they also beat Mozambique in the quarter-final. They were in Group D of the tournament alongside Egypt and Congo DR.

For newly appointed D’Tigress Head Coach, Rena Wakama, she became the first woman to lead a team to the Afrobasket title, weeks after she was appointed to lead the side.

Nigeria’s Amy Okonkwo who finished the final with 23 points, 10 rebounds, and 2 assists, was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament.
