Morocco Bows Out As Africa’s World Cup Hopes End

Date:

Africa’s last hope at the Women’s World Cup ended on Tuesday as Morocco went out, easily beaten 4-0 by France in Adelaide in their last-16 tie. The North Africans follow South Africa and Nigeria out of the tournament. However the fact that the continent has delivered three of its four representatives into the knockout stages must be seen as a triumph as it came against all expectation. Africa, however, remain without a win in the knockout stage of the tournament after nine editions.

France, whose tally of 12 goals in this tournament is the most they have scored at a Women’s World Cup, now meet co-hosts Australia in Brisbane in Saturday’s quarterfinal. Eugenie Le Sommer is France’s all-time top scorer. She now has 92 international goals to her name. Looking ahead to the quarter-final clash with co-hosts Australia, she had this to say:

“Yes, it is a certain pressure [to play the hosts], but it must also be taken as a positive pressure. It’s always better to have the audience with you than against you. For them, it’s a pressure, but at the same time, a whole country [is] behind them. It will be a challenge for us.”

“It’s an adventure that has been absolutely exceptional. I will even say it is something that was unthinkable to say that Morocco was going to get to the round of 16.” Reynald Pedros, Morocco coach.
