NCC Issues Caution Against Unapproved Device Sale And Use

Date:

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has issued a stern warning to merchants and all parties involved regarding the potential negative outcomes associated with the sale and purchase of mobile phones and telecommunications gadgets lacking official approval from the commission.

The NCC’s duty includes certifying telecommunications devices used within the industry. This task aligns with the Nigerian Communications Act (2003), which is primarily aimed at safeguarding consumer rights and interests.

Telecom devices that lack official approval are presumed to have entered the Nigerian market through unofficial channels and are notorious for causing a decline in service quality across networks.

Speaking on behalf of the Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, Dr. Emilia Nwokoro, Deputy Director of the Consumer Affairs Bureau at NCC, addressed the gathering at the 5th installment of Market Conversation, an outreach event targeted at telecom consumers. This event, held recently at the GSM Village in Abuja, was designed as part of the commission’s efforts to create awareness and address this issue.

Nwokoro emphasized the importance of educating market traders about the potential repercussions of engaging in transactions involving substandard products. She underscored that those found selling non-approved devices could face legal consequences, including arrest and prosecution.

She stated that the primary purpose of the assembly was to educate traders about the risks tied to selling non-type approved devices. “The NCC has established a set of procedures for certifying telecom products that can be legally sold and used in Nigeria. This is why the Commission is actively working to raise awareness and ensure that low-quality products are not circulated in any market within Nigeria,” she added.
