Date:

The University of Lagos has held a two-day circular economy roundtable meeting geared towards promoting a sustainable waste management system in the state.

The roundtable meeting, which kicked off on Tuesday, is a collaboration between UNILAG and the University of Eastern Finland on an initiative tagged, “Finland-Lagos Recycling Culture Research and Development Project.”

Speaking at the meeting, the Vice Chancellor, University of Lagos, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Research), Prof. Bola Oboh, said collaborative efforts of the academia, industry and government were needed in order to achieve both local and global development.

According to Ogunsola, some of the key challenges facing several nations of the world can only be addressed through combined efforts, with major universities playing a key role in research, noting that the global problem of environmental pollution called for the need for all stakeholders to come together and proffer sustainable solutions, adding that the university in 2022, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Eastern Finland “to drive collaborative research.”

“This MOU affords us the opportunity to conduct collaborative research where parties shall jointly seek opportunities to conduct scientific research and opportunities for development, innovation and enterprise in the selected activity sectors as showcased today in the circular economy roundtable,” she added.

On his part, Prof. Pertti Pasanen of the University of Eastern Finland said that such collaborations between institutions and countries were highly recommended in order to achieve sustainable solutions in the fight against environmental pollution and global warming.
