FIFA Women’s World Cup: Sweden Reach Semi-Finals With A Dramatic Win Against Japan

Date:

Sweden is into the semi-finals of the FIFA Women’s World Cup for a fifth time after a narrow 2-1 victory over Japan. Defender, Amanda Ilestedt fired home her fourth goal of the tournament in the first half, before Filippa Angeldal’s penalty gave Sweden a two goal advantage.

Japan’s Riko Ueki went on to hit the bar from a spot-kick of her own. Honoka Hayashi would halve the deficit with a close-range strike, but it wasn’t enough to prevent Sweden from going through.

“It’s wonderful, obviously,” Sweden coach Peter Gerhardsson told Swedish radio. The game had everything. In terms of performance, we had our best of the tournament. It got very exciting. Japan is one of the best teams in the tournament …”

After toppling reigning champions USA in the Round of 16, and a fantastic group stage performance, Olympic silver medalist, Sweden go on to face European rivals, Spain in their fifth semi-final in the history of the competition. There will now be a first-time winner of the tournament as Japan was the last former champion remaining.
