INDEFINITE STRIKE LAUNCHED BY AVIATION SECURITY DUE TO INSUFFICIENT WAGES

Date:

Aviation Security (AVSEC) and the logistics sub-sector have initiated an indefinite strike due to dissatisfaction with their wages. The National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) stated that the decision to withdraw services was prompted by the inadequate compensation provided by their employers. AVSEC personnel, predominantly graduates, receive a monthly wage of just N30,000, which outrightly .insufficient in the current Nigerian economic climate.

Despite efforts to negotiate improved pay packages for the workers, all attempts have proven unsuccessful. The circular, signed by Comrade Ocheme Aba, reveals that the AVSEC and logistics sub-sector employees have been grappling with extreme impoverishment within the aviation industry. The unions’ attempts to secure better contracts that would offer fair remuneration for their workforce have faced repeated failures.

The situation has reached a breaking point, with current salary levels at an inadequate N30,000 per month for graduates. This has led to AVSEC employment being characterized as akin to a “slave labour camp.” In response, the unions have issued an ultimatum that all aviation logistics companies’ workers in Nigeria must cease their services indefinitely starting from August 16, 2023. They are demanding fair remuneration to rectify the unjust working conditions.

The only entity authorized to issue further directives on this matter is the national secretariat of NUATE, as clarified by Aba. The strike reflects the urgent need for better compensation and improved working conditions for AVSEC and logistics sub-sector employees in the Nigerian aviation industry.
