FG CONSIDERS INTRODUCING ELECTRIC VEHICLES TO MASS TRANSIT SCHEME IN NIGERIA

Date:

The Federal Ministry of Transportation is exploring the introduction of electric vehicles into the proposed mass transit system in Nigeria. This move aims to alleviate the challenges caused by the removal of fuel subsidies. Senator Said Ahmed Alkali, the Minister of Transportation, revealed this as he resumed his duties at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.

Plans are also in progress to reintroduce the mass transit system in the country. The ministry’s focus is on policies that will reduce transportation costs for both passengers and cargo, especially in light of the current increase in transportation fares.

Senator Alkali emphasized the need for collaboration with related ministries, agencies, and corporate entities to reactivate road transport and mass transit operations in Nigeria. Additionally, he mentioned the importance of modernizing and rehabilitating the rail transport sector to enhance security and support the government’s objectives. The recent constitutional alteration that moved rail transport services from the exclusive list to the concurrent list is expected to aid in achieving these goals.

The Ministry of Transportation’s role in improving public transportation to provide accessible and affordable options for ordinary Nigerians was highlighted. Senator Alkali stressed the ministry’s historical importance as a gateway to the nation’s economy and its ongoing restructuring to address emerging economic challenges. He pledged to work towards realizing the ministry’s mandate and the mandates of the agencies under its jurisdiction.

Overall, the introduction of electric vehicles and the focus on efficient and accessible transportation systems are steps towards achieving the administration’s developmental agenda and ensuring a dynamic and self-reliant economy consistent with the constitution’s socio-economic objectives.
