FG Counters Obaseki’s Claims On Fuel Subsidy Removal

Date:

The Federal Government has expressed its disagreement with Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki’s narrative on the removal of fuel subsidies, describing it as misleading.

Mallam Mohammed Idris Malagi, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, responded to Governor Obaseki’s statement yesterday, where Obaseki expressed concern about the lack of clear plans following the removal of subsidies.

Idris Malagi stated that Governor Obaseki has been redirecting attention from his state’s performance by focusing on national economic challenges since joining the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He emphasized the importance of aligning criticism with reality and focusing on tangible results.

He further explained that Governor Obaseki’s comments disregarded the broader economic context and that the removal of fuel subsidies was advocated by Nigerians, state governors, global institutions, and economic experts due to its fiscal distortions and burden on the economy.

Idris Malagi highlighted that Edo State had benefited from the subsidy removal; with a significant increase in the Federation Account Allocation Committee’s (FAAC) allocation between June and July 2023.

He emphasized that President Tinubu’s decisions are aimed at creating a resilient and sustainable economy and clarified that Governor Obaseki is a member of the National Economic Council (NEC), which made the decisions discussed.

Idris Malagi concluded that the Federal Government is working to provide relief to Nigerians, and urged leaders to focus on governance rather than playing divisive politics.
