CAMEROON’S LAGDO DAM OPENING TRIGGERS URGENT EVACUATION WARNINGS IN NIGERIAN FLOOD-PRONE REGIONS

Date:

States along the path of River Benue in Nigeria are taking precautionary measures against potential flood disasters following the release of substantial water volumes from Cameroon’s Lagdo Dam. The National Emergency Management Agency(NEMA) has advised residents in flood-prone areas of some states including Adamawa, Taraba, Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, Anambra, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Cross River to vacate their communities to prevent loss of life and property.

Cameroon’s decision to open the Lagdo Dam gates due to heavy rainfall prompted the Nigerian government to inform state governors and initiate awareness campaigns. Despite assurances that the dam will release water in a controlled manner, authorities urge preparedness and vigilance; especially in vulnerable areas.

States in the potential flood path, such as Benue, are relocating residents from riverbanks and flood-prone regions. The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency has confirmed that the dam has been releasing water before the formal notification, but the ongoing situation warrants proactive action.

While flood-related demolition and evacuations are underway; the focus remains on mitigating risks, ensuring public safety, and preventing flood-related adversities. The need for swift response and precaution underscores the potential impact of the dam release on downstream states.
