FEDERAL GOVERNMENT PROVIDES TEMPORARY SHELTERS IN STATES TO ADDRESS IMPENDING FLOOD CRISIS

Date:

As a response to the potential flood threat triggered by the recent opening of the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon, the Federal Government has taken proactive steps to provide temporary shelters in states that might be affected. The dam, which had been opened on August 14 and subsequently closed on August 28, led to the release of massive volumes of water; historically causing flooding in Nigeria on an annual basis.

Several states, including Adamawa, Taraba, Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, Anambra, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Cross River, are at risk of severe flooding if adequate measures are not implemented. The Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mustapha Ahmed, revealed that many states are already taking preventive actions, such as clearing drainages, desilting rivers, and preparing water channels.

Ahmed emphasized that while the Federal Government is providing temporary shelters to support state governments, the responsibility of setting up internally displaced persons (IDP) camps lies with the state authorities. If necessary, NEMA will offer additional support in the form of temporary shelters and tents.

However, there is currently no standing budget for emergency operations related to the impending flood. Ahmed noted that the full extent of the damage caused by the opening of the Lagdo Dam will only be assessable after the flood season; at which point a budget for recovery efforts can be determined.
