Athletics: Richardson Backs Up World 100m Gold In Zurich

Date:

Newly crowned world champion Sha’Carri Richardson stormed to victory in the women’s 100 metres at the Weltklasse Diamond League meeting on Thursday. The American, who captured her first world 100m title in Budapest last week in a sizzling 10.65 seconds, pulled away from the field over the final 30 meters in Zurich to cross in 10.88. Natasha Morrison clocked 11.00 to finish second and her fellow Jamaican Elaine Thompson-Herah also ran 11.00 in third.

“I wanted to come out here and perform,” said Jackson. “To be honest, the season has not finished yet, so my focus is not yet on the Olympic Games, but on this 2023 season. I just want to finish this season well.”

Venezuela’s Yulimar Rojas, who won a fourth consecutive gold in Budapest with her last effort, caused no such drama in Zurich; winning the triple jump easily with a best of 15.15m. Bahrain’s Winfred Mutile Yavi (steeplechase) and Jamaican Danielle Williams (100m hurdles) also mirrored their winning ways from Hungary.
