Lagos Blue Line Rail System To Commence Operations September 4, 2023

Date:

After several delays from its initial scheduled dates of March and August 2023, the Lagos Rail Mass Transit Blue Line System is set to begin operations on Monday, September 4, 2023. The announcement was made by Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo, Managing Director of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority(LAMATA), during a guided tour of the Blue Line Terminal in Marina.

Governor Sanwo-Olu will inaugurate the service with the first ride at 9 a.m. on Monday, followed by the commencement of partial passenger operations on Tuesday, September 5. The morning peak hours will span from 6:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., while the evening peak hours will run from 4 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Initially, the train will operate 12 trips in two schedules, with a 90-second stop at each station. Once fully operational in four weeks, it will run 76 trips daily from 5:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., expecting to serve between 150,000 to 175,000 passengers daily.

Regarding fares, a full-length trip from Marina to Mile 2 will cost N750, while zonal fares for shorter journeys will range between N400 and N500. Notably, a 50 percent discount on fares applies to all state-owned transport systems during this period, capping the highest fare for the full trip at N375.

Safety measures include a robust security system with over 300 CCTV cameras installed along the Blue Line Rail, with 30 cameras dedicated to monitoring the tracks. Plain-clothed security personnel and Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps(LNSC) officers will accompany passengers, ensuring a secure environment.

Additionally, during the initial four weeks, the train will operate on a locomotive system to sync with the electric infrastructure and familiarize passengers with the system.
