NIMC TO IMPLEMENT COMPREHENSIVE NATIONAL IDENTITY SYSTEM FOR EFFICIENT GOVERNMENT SERVICES

The Acting Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Abisoye Coker-Odusote, has reassured Nigerians of a seamless National Identification Number (NIN) registration process across the nation and abroad. In a statement released in Abuja, Coker-Odusote also pledged the development of a comprehensive national identity system aimed at streamlining government services and improving service delivery.

Coker-Odusote emphasized that NIN registration remains free for all eligible citizens; with a commitment to ensuring accessibility in line with global standards. She stated, “A unified identity system ensures that citizens receive the services they are entitled to in a more efficient manner.” Under her leadership, NIMC aims to strengthen the operation and regulation of all aspects related to national identity; including NIN enrolment and issuance, national e-ID card issuance, identity verification, data harmonization, and authentication.

In the digital age, integrated identity becomes the backbone of e-governance initiatives; facilitating key government programs like social safety nets and financial inclusion. Coker-Odusote highlighted that an integrated identity system contributes to improved fiscal management, transparency, and inclusivity. Eznsuring that marginalized and vulnerable populations are not excluded from government services.

Acknowledging the challenges faced by millions of Nigerians during NIN enrolment, the Acting NIMC DG pledged to address issues such as long processing times and administrative errors. She called for understanding and support from all stakeholders in Nigeria’s digital identity space and reiterated NIMC’s commitment to expedite NIN issuance and provide ancillary services to the citizenry.

Coker-Odusote also expressed NIMC’s dedication to supporting the policy direction of the administration and its efforts to uplift Nigerians out of poverty, improve food security, drive economic growth, and enhance security.
