PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION PETITION TRIBUNAL TO DELIVER JUDGMENT ON ATIKU AND OBI’S PETITIONS

Date:

The Presidential Election Petition Tribunal has announced that it will deliver its judgment on the petitions filed by Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), and Mr. Peter Obi, challenging the declaration of Senator Bola Tinubu as President. This decision comes after a month and four days of hearings and deliberations.

The five-member panel of the Presidential Election Petition Court, led by Justice Haruna Tsammani, had previously stated that the judgment date would be communicated after parties adopted their final written addresses. In addition to Atiku and Obi’s petitions, the tribunal will also rule on the petition by the Allied People’s Movement (APM), which sought the disqualification of Tinubu due to an alleged unlawful nomination of the vice-presidential candidate, Senator Kashim Shettima.

The petitioners, Atiku and Obi, are claiming victory in the February 25 presidential poll, which was officially won by Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC). They argue that Tinubu did not win the majority of lawful votes as claimed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and accuse INEC of manipulating the process to favor the ruling APC, and Tinubu.

The petitioners have also raised concerns about INEC’s declaration of Tinubu as the winner; despite the ongoing collation process at the time; as many of the presidential election results were yet to be uploaded onto INEC’s Results Viewing Portals. They allege substantial non-compliance and violations of electoral laws.

The judgment is eagerly awaited, and security measures have been put in place to ensure a peaceful atmosphere during the announcement. The tribunal has also welcomed media houses interested in broadcasting the proceedings live at no cost to the Court.
