SECOND RUNWAY AT ABUJA’S NNAMDI AZIKIWE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT SET TO BE READY IN 12 MONTHS

Date:

The Minister for Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has announced that the second runway at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA) in Abuja will be completed within the next 12 months. Keyamo made this announcement following an inspection of the airport.

He revealed that the compensation process for land acquisition is currently underway, with payments already initiated. Work on the runway is expected to commence within the next week, and Keyamo expressed confidence that it would be ready for use in a year.

Keyamo emphasized the significance of this project; highlighting its importance as a backup runway for the capital city’s airport. In the past, issues with the primary runway in Abuja led to inconveniences for travelers; such as the need to divert flights to Kaduna.

He called for the support of all relevant government agencies: including the National Assembly and the presidency, to ensure the timely completion of this crucial project.

In addition to the runway project, Keyamo addressed the need for improvements in Nigerian airports. He identified three key areas for enhancement: chillers to provide a comfortable atmosphere for passengers, working elevators for those who cannot use stairs, and functional conveyor belts for baggage handling. Keyamo stressed the importance of procuring high-quality equipment to ensure a better experience for travelers.

Keyamo also briefly mentioned the suspension of the Nigerian Air project due to concerns raised by aviation agencies and public outcry. He assured passengers that they would soon enjoy improved comfort and facilities at Nigerian airports.

This development marks a significant step toward enhancing aviation infrastructure in Nigeria; ultimately benefiting both domestic and international travelers.
