MTN Nigeria’s Green Energy Investment To Drive Sustainable Growth

MTN Nigeria has embarked on an initiative in relation to sustainable energy, aligning with Nigeria’s ambitions for reduced carbon emissions. In their latest Climate Change Report for 2023, the prominent Information and Communications Technology (ICT) company outlined its partnership with a renewable energy Independent Power Producer (IPP) program. This collaboration aims to implement a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) power solution to supply energy to their corporate headquarters, MTN Plaza, and their primary data centre located in Ikoyi.

Nigeria’s Climate Change Act of 2021 sets forth a roadmap for the country’s green and sustainable growth; targeting lower greenhouse gas emissions. It establishes the framework for achieving a net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) target between 2050 and 2070; with a strong emphasis on reaching net-zero emissions in the latter half of this century.

MTN’s climate change report highlights the impact of their adoption of three 1.1-megawatt (MW) gas generators, resulting in a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and substantial energy cost savings; totaling over NGN 570 million. Furthermore, MTN Nigeria has implemented motion-activated light sensors in their facilities to optimize energy consumption. They have also introduced a proof-of-concept solar project generating more than 4,000 kilowatt hours of clean electricity each month.

CEO of MTN Nigeria, Karl Toriola, emphasized the company’s commitment to the nation’s environmental well-being; he said, “Our dedication to Nigeria extends beyond providing connectivity. We recognize the environmental challenges facing our country and are committed to being a part of the solution. Our investments in sustainable energy and infrastructure are not just good for business but are also essential for shaping Nigeria’s future.”

Additional information for Nigerians is that MTN Nigeria has exciting news for education and youth empowerment enthusiasts. They have announced the launch of the fourth edition of the mPulse Spelling Bee Competition, which has been scheduled to kick of by September 13, 2023. This year’s competition will feature a dynamic blend of digital and on-site components; with the initial rounds hosted on the MTN mPulse website. The competition’s grand finale is set to be held in Lagos.

Geared towards primary and secondary school students aged 9 to 15, the mPulse Spelling Bee Competition was introduced in 2020 to instill a love for language and learning while fostering healthy competition among students. Referencing the statement released by the tech company, this initiative has already empowered more than 40,000 Nigerian students with valuable digital skills, educational resources, and the means to unlock their full potential.

Adia Sowho, Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) of MTN Nigeria, reaffirmed the brand’s unwavering commitment to education and youth empowerment.
