NCC CALLS FOR COLLABORATION TO TACKLE MULTIPLE-TAXATION CHALLENGE IN TELECOM SECTOR

Date:

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has taken a proactive stance in addressing the issue of multiple taxation within the telecommunications sector. This initiative was emphasized by Adeleke Adewolu, the Executive Commissioner for Stakeholders Management at NCC, during a regional workshop held in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The workshop, themed “Navigating the Landscape of Multiple Taxation and Regulations: Fostering Sustainable Growth through Collaboration,” served as a platform for stakeholders to deliberate on strategies to alleviate the burden of what the World Bank terms ‘nuisance taxes.’

Adewolu, in his address, acknowledged the significance of taxation as an economic development tool. However, he also underscored the potential detrimental effects of multiple taxation, which can impede development and discourage investment. He assured the telecom industry of NCC’s unwavering commitment to resolving this pressing issue, aiming to create an environment conducive to both local and foreign investments.

Gbolahan Awonuga, the Executive Secretary of ALTON, shed light on the weight of the tax burden faced by telecom companies. Despite their apparent profitability, these firms contend with a staggering 49 different taxes and levies. Awonuga urged governments to prioritize creating a more business-friendly environment, emphasizing the long-term benefits such an approach would yield.

Additionally, Efosa Idehen, the Director of Compliance Monitoring and Enforcement, stressed the need for a structured framework to ensure that only legitimate tax heads are levied. This signifies a concerted effort to streamline the taxation process, promoting transparency and fairness within the industry.

This collaborative effort between the NCC and telecom stakeholders aims to not only alleviate the burden of multiple taxation but also to pave the way for sustained growth and development in Nigeria’s telecommunications sector.
