Police Crackdown On University Of Lagos Students Protesting Tuition Fee Increase

Date:

Yesterday, chaos erupted at the University of Lagos, Akoka, as law enforcement officers from the state Police command confronted students demonstrating against the proposed hike in their school fees.

The University’s management had earlier announced an adjustment to the mandatory fees for both new and returning students; slated to go into effect on September 1st.

Eyewitnesses reported that security forces employed tear gas to disperse the students, who were marching from the Sabo area of Yaba towards the campus. Police officers formed a barrier, preventing the students from approaching the campus gate.

More than 20 police vehicles arrived at the university, accompanied by the institution’s security personnel and members of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps.

Visitors, including prospective students attending screening processes, were turned away at the locked campus gate; under the control of security personnel.

Balogun Oladeji, the President-elect of the Faculty of Education Students Association, spoke on behalf of the students. He accused ACP Ayodeji, the Police Area Commander, of instructing his officers to use force against the students and of detaining some of his colleagues.

Oladeji identified the detained students as Femi Adeyeye and Philip Olatinwo; emphasizing that the protest would continue until their release.

Efforts to reach Mrs. Adejoke Alaga, Head of the University’s Communication unit, for comments on the matter proved futile, as she did not respond to text messages nor answer phone calls.
