President Tinubu Reinstates Boards Of Key Federal Institutions

Date:

In a significant development, President Bola Tinubu has decided to reinstate the boards of several critical federal institutions; reversing a previous directive to dissolve them. This decision comes following a televised request to exempt specific statutory agencies under the jurisdiction of the Federal Ministry of Justice.

The Solicitor-General of the Federation and Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Justice, Mrs. Beatrice Jedy-Agba, conveyed this exemption in a letter dated September 4, 2023. President Tinubu has granted this exemption to the boards of the Council of Legal Education (CLE), the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), and the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS).

This development follows concerns raised by stakeholders in the justice sector regarding the dissolution of these boards. Notably, the NHRC governing council, led by Dr. Salamatu Husseini, had undergone Senate screening and confirmation in June 2021, and the NIALS board, traditionally chaired by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, had faced questions about its dissolution.

The decision to reinstate these boards aims to address these concerns and ensure the effective functioning of these critical institutions.
