Amusan Picks Paris 2024 Olympics Ticket

Date:

World Record holder in the 100m hurdles, Tobiloba Amusan, is the first Nigerian athlete to secure her place at the Paris 2024 Olympics Games. The Ogun State-born hurdler secured her spot at the BAUHAUS-Galan Diamond League meeting in Stockholm, Sweden on July 2, when she ran 12.52 to win the high hurdles race at the Olympia stadium.

The entry standard for the 100m hurdles for the Paris 2024 Games is 12.77secs. Last December, World Athletics (WA), revealed the pathway to qualify for athletics at Paris 2024, including the entry standards athletes will need to achieve during the timeframes July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2024.

Though, her qualification is subject to confirmation at the Nigerian National Trials in 2024, when the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), picks the nation’s flag bearers for the Games. Tobi Express, as Amusan is fondly called by her fans, missed the podium at the 19th World Athletics Championship in Budapest, Hungary. Before the Budapest misadventure, Amusan had improved her time, scorching to a 12.34 personal season’s best at the Silesia Kamila Skolimowska Memorial Diamond League meeting in Chorzów, Poland.

Meanwhile, long jumper, Ese Brume, missed confirming her Paris 2024 ticket at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest by just two centimetres after jumping 6.84m to place fourth in the final.

Brume has appeared in two Olympic Games. She was Nigeria’s last athlete standing at the Rio 2016 Olympics Games, her debut; where she placed fifth in the final. The Delta State born long jumper grabbed a bronze medal at the last Olympics Games held in Tokyo, Japan. Many athletics followers believe that there is still enough time for Brume to pick her ticket to the Paris 2024 Games.
