Surprise: Niger Declares The Abandonment Of Military Pact With Benin

Date:

In an unexpected development, Niger has officially announced the termination of its military agreement with neighboring Benin. The decision comes amidst concerns that Benin had granted authorization for the deployment of troops, mercenaries, and military resources on Nigerien soil, in anticipation of a potential military intervention by the West African regional coalition.

The declaration was made via a televised statement by the Nigerien junta on Tuesday; alleging that Benin had permitted the presence of soldiers, hired fighters, and war materials in preparation for a possible ECOWAS intervention. Consequently, the newly established authorities in Niger have decided to sever their military cooperation agreement with Benin.

As of now, there has been no immediate response from Benin regarding this development.

ECOWAS, the regional bloc, is actively engaged in negotiations with the leaders responsible for the July 26 coup in Niger. However, it has emphasized that if diplomatic efforts prove fruitless, it remains prepared to employ military force as a last resort to restore constitutional order and reverse the coup. The specifics of potential troop deployments have not been disclosed by ECOWAS, while Niger recently confirmed that discussions with the bloc were ongoing.

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, currently holding the rotating chairmanship of ECOWAS, has proposed a nine-month transition period leading back to civilian rule as a possible solution to satisfy regional powers. This contrasts with the three-year timeline previously suggested by Niger’s junta.

The military intervention, led by General Abdourahamane Tchiani, a Former Commander of the presidential guard, resulted in the removal of President Mohamed Bazoum.
