Nigeria, US, And Partners Collaborate To Enhance Security In Gulf Of Guinea

In an effort to boost security in the Gulf of Guinea, the Nigerian government, along with the United States and France, will be tackling security issues in the region during the forthcoming 2023 Lagos International Maritime Week.

According to a statement released on Tuesday by the event’s organizers, Zoe Maritime Resources Limited, the discussions will encompass a wide range of topics: port development, transportation, legal matters, dispute resolution, training and education, as well as environmental concerns and the role of women in the maritime sector.

The LIMWEEK, which aspires to be a week-long showcase of the maritime industry’s finest achievements, is scheduled to take place on September 19, 2023.

This initiative, spearheaded by Zoe Maritime Resources, will provide a platform for stakeholders and experts to tackle the various challenges facing maritime activities in Africa.

Key figures expected to attend the conference include Adegboyega Oyetola, the Minister of Marine and the Blue Economy; José Abeso, the Executive Secretary of the Gulf of Guinea Commission; and Adenike Ukonga, the former Executive Secretary of the Gulf of Guinea Commission based in Angola.

Oritsematosan Edodo-Emore, the program’s convener, emphasised the importance of assessing Nigeria and Africa’s progress in fulfilling their global commitment to maintaining a clean and safe marine environment; free from ship pollution, after 50 years of legislative existence.

Additional critical issues to be addressed during the conference include wastewater disposal and its impact on the logistics value chain, insurance policies for oil tankers, risk management strategies to prevent pollution, and the tax responsibilities of international shipping companies.
