Lagos Halts Third Mainland Bridge Repairs

The Lagos State Government has decided to delay the planned maintenance work on the Third Mainland Bridge due to the adverse weather conditions experienced in the state over the weekend.

The Government, in conjunction with the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, had earlier announced its intentions to carry out essential repair work on the sections of the Third Mainland Bridge that required immediate attention. These repairs were initially slated for two consecutive Sundays, namely September 17 and 24, 2023, from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm on each of those days.

According to a statement released by Abdulhafiz Toriola, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, the repair work was strategically divided into two phases, with the initial phase targeting the most critical areas of the bridge, particularly the Iyana Oworonshoki section leading towards Adeniji Adele/Lagos Island. The decision to schedule the repair work on Sundays was made to minimize disruptions to motorists, and alternative routes were designated to accommodate the rehabilitation period.

However, a late Saturday statement from the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, revealed that the heavy rainfall had hindered the initial preparations for the repair work on the bridge’s asphalt surface. He assured that a new date for the repair work would be communicated in the future; taking into account the weather conditions. In the meantime, motorists are encouraged to continue using the bridge while exercising caution and adhering to safety measures.
