Germany Moves into Partnership with Nigeria Private Sector

In order to drive the implementation of green hydrogen to combat climate change and achieve sustainable economic growth, a strong partnership with the private sector in Nigeria has been established by Germany

Speaking at a Business Roundtable tagged ‘Enabling Green Hydrogen Pilot Projects through Partnerships,’ the Advisor, International Hydrogen Ramp Up Programme, Ofonama Archibong, said green hydrogen is very significant and important especially when it comes to application in hard-to-abate industrial sectors and energy, transport and exports among other applications.

Archibong goes on to say that in Nigeria, the green hydrogen market is still in its early stages and therefore requires several support instruments to enable and activate the market.

He also affirmed the International Hydrogen Ramp-Up Program (H2Uppp) funded by the German Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action(BMWK), and implemented by GIZ in partnership with the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (AHK) supports the market ramp up for green hydrogen and power-to-X (PIX) technologies and products in Nigeria, in cooperation with the private sector.

He said the objective will only be achieved if the early-stage market development activities that will kickstart and ramp up the market and increase knowledge is implemented.

The Chief Executive Officer of Geogrid Energy, Dayo Shobitan, said green hydrogen will almost certainly play a significant part in the future energy system, and that Nigeria has favourable conditions for the generation of green hydrogen; adding that the cost of production might not exceed £3.5/Kg until 2030, which can compete favourably with the leading international competitors.

The Chief Technical Officer of Dunatos Technology Limited, Muideen Oladapo, said the advancements in renewable energy technology has set the stage for the development of a cutting-edge hybrid system, and that the deployment of this hybrid renewable energy system has the potential of reducing greenhouse gas emissions significantly, and contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable future for generations to come.

Speaking on the economic benefit, Oladapo said this renewable energy will help communities to create job opportunities, stimulate local economies, reduce energy costs and enhance energy security for a more prosperous and sustainable society.

Finally, Oladapo noted that the development of the renewable energy system requires government institutions, private entities and local stakeholders to work together to achieve the vision of a greener and more sustainable future.
