NCC INTRODUCES 10-DIGIT NUMBERING FORMAT FOR LAND LINES

Date:

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has recently unveiled a new numbering format for fixed lines (landlines) within the country. This development is in line with the commission’s obligations as stipulated in the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA) of 2003, which empowers it to oversee Nigeria’s numbering resources.

Effective from January 1, 2024, the Fixed-Lines Numbering Format will expand from eight digits to ten digits, achieved by appending ’02’ as a prefix to existing fixed numbers. As of July 2023, the NCC reported a total of 96,771 fixed wireless and wired (landline) connections nationwide.

The Director of Public Affairs at NCC, Reuben Muoka, clarified that both the old and new numbering formats will remain operational concurrently until the designated cut-over date of December 31, 2023. After this transition period, the new format, starting with the ’02’ prefix, will assume full recognition across all networks.

To illustrate, the previous number 09461700 will now be dialed as 0209461700 in the new format. Similarly, for locations such as Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Kano, the current number formats (e.g., 014630643, 094630643, 084460643, and 064460643) will adopt the ’02’ prefix accordingly.

Worthy of note,  this numbering modification exclusively pertains to fixed telephone lines; leaving the existing mobile numbering format (comprising of 11 digits) in the country unaffected. In industry terms, a fixed line denotes a wired connection that allows an end user to make phone calls or access the Internet via a cable; it is distinct from mobile lines, which utilise wireless transmission technologies.
