COEASU TO FG: PRIORITISE TEACHER EDUCATION AND FUND EDUCATION

Date:

The leadership of the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) has made known to the government,  the critical need for comprehensive reforms in Nigeria’s education sector. Dr. Smart Olugbeko, the President of COEASU, highlighted the long-standing neglect of teacher education; a crucial cornerstone for national development. He called upon the newly appointed Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, to give teacher education a central role in his transformation agenda.

Dr. Olugbeko expressed deep concern over the state of education in Nigeria, underscoring its precarious state. He stressed that without significant attention to teacher education, the current administration would struggle to address the myriad challenges facing the education system.

The COEASU president underscored the pivotal role teachers play in shaping the quality of education. He emphasised that the government’s lack of emphasis on teacher education has contributed to the decline in educational standards, and eroded trust in the system.

COEASU’s core demands, which the Federal Government has yet to address, include the release of a substantial revitalisation fund, and the revision of key legislation governing Federal Colleges of Education. Additionally, COEASU has voiced its rejection of the Integrated Personnel Payroll and Information System (IPPIS).

In response, the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), Professor Paulinus Chijioke Okwelle, affirmed the commission’s commitment to creating a conducive environment for teachers across the country.

Representing the Minister of Education, Uchenna Uba, the Director of the Colleges of Education Department at the Federal Ministry of Education, assured that the ministry is actively working to address the concerns raised by COEASU. Notably, steps have been taken to initiate the disbursement of the Needs Assessment fund.
