NANS STANDS FIRM AGAINST TUITION FEE HIKE

Date:

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has taken a firm stance against any federal government-owned university unilaterally increasing the obligatory and additional fees for students without their input. NANS officials, Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, National Vice President for External Relations, and Vanessa Egbeahie, Vice President for Inter-campus Affairs, emphasised the importance of moderation, reasonableness, and affordability in any fee adjustments made by universities.

To address the underlying issue of poor funding from the federal government, NANS urges universities to engage students, particularly at union levels, and other key stakeholders in discussions regarding the necessity, and extent of fee increments.

They pointed out that all parties must reach a consensus before implementing any adjustments, as exemplified by recent protests in institutions like the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, and the University of Jos.

NANS leaders at both national and zonal levels are closely monitoring fee hikes across campuses. They stand ready to support student protests against fee hikes made without students’ involvement; stating that any such increase, especially regarding the percentage, will not be accepted. They assert that university management must ensure proper student participation before finalising fee adjustments.

While some institutions attribute fee hikes to high inflation rates in the country, Akinteye suggests that they should have limited the increase to 24.5% of the previous fees, taking inflation into account. However, he underlines that the failure of the Federal Government to adequately fund public schools is the fundamental cause of these fee adjustments.
