Anambra State Governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, has taken a significant step towards enhancing access to education in the state by abolishing all fees and levies in government-run schools. This policy applies to students across nursery, primary, and junior secondary levels. The governor made this announcement during visits to Premier Primary School in Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area, and Ado Girls Secondary School in Onitsha.
Governor Soludo emphatically stated that no teacher should solicit money from students in any manner within government schools. He issued a stern warning that any educator found contravening this directive would face appropriate sanctions.
Although Anambra had previously maintained tuition-free schooling, there had been a notable imposition of additional charges on parents.
In his address, Governor Soludo cited the constitutional obligation of the Nigerian government to offer free primary or secondary education as soon as practicable. He acknowledged that government-run public schools faced challenges; particularly in terms of infrastructure. However, he declared his administration’s commitment to a comprehensive overhaul; aiming to position public education as a model within the sector.
The governor pledged significant investments in school infrastructure over the ensuing weeks and months, outlining a comprehensive agenda for the education sector. He emphasised that education serves as a vital equaliser; asserting its importance not only for the future but also for the present. Governor Soludo articulated a broad vision of mainstreaming education as the cornerstone of societal progress.
