NIGERIA CALLS FOR OPEN, SECURE INTERNET ACCESS

Date:

The Nigerian government has affirmed its commitment to a free and secure Internet for Africa; aiming to bridge the digital divide and unlock innovative opportunities across the continent. Dr. Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, emphasised this stance at the recently concluded Africa Internet Governance Forum (AfIGF) held in Abuja.

He underlined President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration’s dedication to fostering collaborations and international dialogues to realise  these objectives.

Addressing the forum virtually, Minister Tijani highlighted Nigeria’s position as the largest telecommunications market in Africa, and pledged vigilance regarding emerging internet technologies. Nigeria intends to collaborate with fellow African nations on various fronts to ensure effective governance of the internet; enabling its abundant resources to contribute to the growth of both citizens, and the nation.

Tijani stressed the pivotal role of collective efforts in developing the economy; emphasising  that fora like these are instrumental in bridging digital divides; enhancing cybersecurity, safeguarding digital rights, and fostering innovation. He urged all stakeholders to prioritise a collaborative approach in formulating policies and strategies that will shape the future of the internet in Africa.

The Minister commended the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and other government agencies that constituted the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for their roles in ensuring the success of the 2023 AfIGF.

Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, provided insights into NCC’s commitment to creating a secure internet ecosystem in Nigeria through regulatory initiatives. He highlighted Nigeria’s significant progress in broadband penetration, basic Internet usage, and voice subscriptions, which have made notable contributions to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
