INEC Reveals Dates For Edo And Ondo State Governorship Elections

Date:

The Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC), has made an announcement regarding the timing of the upcoming governorship elections in Edo and Ondo States. According to the latest update, Edo’s governorship election will take place on September 21, 2024, while Ondo State’s election is scheduled for November 16, 2024.

The reasoning behind these dates is straightforward: INEC is adhering to Section 178 (2) of Nigeria’s Constitution 1999 (as amended), which mandates that these elections occur no sooner than 150 days and no later than 30 days before the incumbent governor’s term concludes.

Sam Olumekun, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, unveiled these dates in Abuja. He emphasised that Edo Governor will vacate office on November 11, 2024, and Ondo Governor on February 23, 2025.

A further breakdown: the earliest date for Edo governorship election is October 12, 2024, while Ondo is January 24, 2025. INEC isn’t bending these rules.

INEC also followed the Electoral Act of 2022, Section 28 (1), which stipulates that INEC must officially announce the election no later than 360 days before the actual election date. And they have met that requirement!

Below is the comprehensive timeline: Edo election day is locked in for Saturday, September 21, 2024. Party primaries will run from February 1 to February 24, 2024. The submission of the list of nominated candidates through the online portal will commence at 9:00 am on March 4, 2024, and close at 6:00 pm on March 24, 2024. The final list of candidates will be unveiled on April 23, 2024. Campaigning by political parties in public will begin on April 24, 2024, and cease 24 hours before election day on September 19, 2024.

As for Ondo State, the governorship election is set for Saturday, November 16, 2024. Party primaries are scheduled from April 6 to April 27, 2024. The submission of the list of nominated candidates through the online portal will commence at 9:00 am on April 29, 2024, and close at 6:00 pm on May 20, 2024. The final list of candidates will be published on June 18, 2024. Political parties can start their public campaigns on June 19, 2024, but they must conclude 24 hours before the election day on November 14, 2024.

For all the fine print, you can find the detailed timetable and schedule of activities on INEC official website and social media platforms. INEC’s message to political parties and candidates is crystal clear: These dates are non-negotiable.
