Transport Minister Moves to Decongest Apapa

In a bid to decongest and enhance efficiency in Nigeria’s transportation sector, the Minister of Transportation, Senator Said Alkali, has launched the first maiden train cargo trip and loading of 30 coach container wagon trains from Apapa Port to Ibadan. This initiative, which commenced yesterday, Thursday September 28, 2023, is no doubt a significant milestone in the ongoing quest to relieve the burden on Apapa Port and streamline the movement of goods across the country.

The rail transport initiative is aimed at causing a significant change in transporting 90 trucks of 40-foot containers daily, poised to revolutionise Nigeria’s logistics landscape. The 30 coach container wagons, loaded with a diverse range of goods, embarked on their maiden voyage, showcasing the immense potential of rail transport in Nigeria, and the result was completing a trip from Apapa Port to Ibadan, which takes approximately 130 kilometres efficiently and punctually too. The train is expected to go on this journey three times a day in order to ensure a continuous flow of goods to various parts of the country.

This great achievement has been met with both praise and optimism from stakeholders across the nation; with business owners, importers, exporters, and citizens eagerly expecting the positive impact this initiative will have on the economy, job creation, and overall ease of doing business.

By embracing rail transport, the government wants to reduce traffic congestion that has afflicted the Apapa area for years; causing commuters to waste ample time in traffic and leading to significant economic losses and hampered trade activities. Rail transport will also help reduce the wear and tear on roads, enhance safety, and provide a more sustainable and eco-friendly transportation system.

As this groundbreaking initiative gains momentum, plans to expand the network and establish similar container transportation routes to other key locations across Nigeria are already ongoing. This strategic expansion will not only enhance connectivity but also promote regional integration and strengthen economic growth.

The Ibadan journey is a significant positive leap in Nigeria’s pursuit of a modern, efficient, rail transport. It is a sustainable transportation system that serves as a testament to the government’s dedication to improving trade facilitation, reducing logistics costs, and positioning Nigeria as a regional logistics hub.

With the successful launch of this game-changer initiative, Nigeria’s transportation sector is definitely making progress. The days of traffic congestion and logistical bottlenecks at Apapa Port are about to be over as a brighter and more prosperous future for the nation is about to begi
