NLC PUSHES FOR N100,000 OR N200,000 MINIMUM WAGE

Date:

In a bold move to address the escalating cost of living, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced plans to negotiate a revised minimum wage; potentially reaching up to N200,000. President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero, revealed this during a recent appearance on Channels Television’s “Politics Today.” The decision to temporarily suspend the planned strike was made to grant the government time to fulfill its commitments to organised labor.

Ajaero clarified that the proposed N35,000 wage increment should not be misconstrued as the new minimum wage, emphasising that it is an additional component. He stressedthat the final figure, which could either be  N100,000 or N200,000, would be determined by various factors including inflation, and the overall cost of living. Ajaero stated, “We would not go to ask for N65,000. We would go for a realistic amount because N65,000 is about $70 which is not up to minimum wage.”

For any new minimum wage to take effect, it would require legislative backing from the National Assembly, according to the NLC President. He explained: “The minimum wage is a product of law. Until it is legislated in the National Assembly, it is not a minimum wage.” This underlines the critical role that the legislative body would play in implementing the proposed adjustments.

The NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) took a significant step by suspending the planned nationwide strike due to concerns over the removal of fuel subsidy and the floating of the naira. Following a meeting between labor leaders and government representatives, a memorandum was signed, outlining a 30-day suspension of the strike. The agreement also emphasised a commitment to adhere to the principles of social dialogue in future engagements between all parties involved.
