NUT SUSPENDS STRIKE FOLLOWING FCT MINISTER’S INTERVENTION

Date:

The Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Federal Capital Territory Wing, has decided to suspend its ongoing strike for a period of six weeks. This decision comes in the wake of the intervention of the FCT Minister, Mr. Nyesom Wike.

The Chairman of the union, Mr. Stephen Knabayi, officially confirmed the suspension during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja. Knabayi disclosed that the strike, which commenced on October 2, will remain suspended until November 13 to facilitate the implementation of commitments made by the Chairmen of the six Area Councils and the FCT minister.

Knabayi further elaborated that the strike was called off subsequent to an agreement reached between the striking teachers and the Chairmen of the six Area Councils, a resolution made possible by the intervention of the minister.

A pivotal development in this resolution was the establishment of a 6-man committee, duly inaugurated to seek a lasting solution to the issues at hand.

In a more detailed explanation of the rationale behind the decision, Knabayi stated, “We reconsidered our stand and suspended the strike following the intervention of the FCT minister. We proceeded on strike over seven issues. Five of them now have an agreement for their implementation starting from October.”

He added, “Regarding the other two issues – peculiar allowances and payment of minimum wage arrears – the minister has committed to intervening with an agreement for their implementation within four weeks. Thus, we have suspended the strike for six weeks to afford the minister the opportunity to take the necessary actions and oversee the fulfillment of these commitments.”

This breakthrough is expected to have a positive impact on the educational landscape in the Federal Capital Territory, as both parties have come together to find a mutually beneficial resolution.
