NCAA Set To Conduct Comprehensive Nationwide Airport Assessment

Date:

In order to address any detected safety and security shortcomings of facilities, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has declared its intention to conduct an extensive examination of airports around the country.

Captain Musa Nuhu, the Director General of the NCAA, emphasised the necessity of this assessment in light of Nigeria’s subpar performance in the recent Universal Operations Safety Audit conducted by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), in a press briefing held in Lagos. Nigeria’s score of 70 percent fell short of the 75 percent pass mark, and the global average.

Nuhu stressed that exceeding the 70 percent mark with ICAO is nearly unattainable without completing airport certification; a step that Nigeria has not yet taken for its five international airports due to various challenges and obstacles.

He stated that signing airport certification “when our airports do not meet the required standards would be detrimental to Nigeria. The system needs to be equitable. We acknowledge the challenges, but we are committed to addressing them collaboratively with industry stakeholders, both public and private, under the guidance of the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development.” He added that they were determined to reach their destination, and progress is underway.
