HOUSING MINISTRY PLANS AFFORDABLE HOUSING PROJECTS

Date:

In the quest to revolutionise inclusivity, and affordability in Nigeria’s housing sector, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development unveils a visionary initiative. Spearheaded by the Honorable Minister, Ahmed Dangiwa. This groundbreaking strategy promises to redefine accessibility to housing for Nigerians of all income brackets.

Mark Chieshe, the Special Adviser on Media to the Minister, states that this innovative approach was introduced while reviewing affordable housing options. Dangiwa established a committee dedicated to this cause during his first week in office. Their task? To ensure that the Ministry’s projects align with price ranges within reach for low- and medium-income earners.

The revised designs feature ingenious cost-saving measures. These include introducing organic one-bedroom bungalows to reduce purchase costs. Beneficiaries also have the flexibility to expand to two or three bedrooms as their income grows. Additionally, optimised space management, smart roofing techniques, and basic internal finishings are incorporated to enhance affordability.

Minister Dangiwa commends the Design Team for their creativity and underscores the need for innovative concepts like cross-subsidies. These are essential to counter the challenges posed by inflation and soaring building material costs. He emphasised, “For us to achieve our goals, we have to think out of the box, and embrace creative solutions.”

Dangiwa further explained that cross-subsidies are crucial policy tools used globally to tackle housing affordability issues. They also promote inclusive urban development. This approach involves redistributing the costs and benefits of housing development across different income groups.

To implement this vision, the Ministry plans to work out a comprehensive framework for introducing cross-subsidies in projects delivered through Public Private Partnerships, and the agencies under the Ministry. This marks a significant step towards a more inclusive and accessible housing landscape in Nigeria.
