NIGERIA LEADS AFRICA WITH 100 MINI-GRIDS, REA SAYS

Date:

The fredral Government has disclosed that Nigeria now hosts more than 100 mini-electricity grids, solidifying its position as one of Africa’s leading markets in this sector. This revelation was made during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and the Africa Mini-Grid Developers Association in Abuja.

Parties involved in the agreement aim to enhance, and expedite mini-grid progress in Nigeria, with a focus on sharing knowledge, building capacity, and improving sector coordination, among other key initiatives.

Ahmad Salihijo, the Managing Director of REA, emphasised the pivotal role of data-driven programmes and initiatives in the implementation of these mini-grids. He also noted that despite the progress, there remains a substantial need for more decentralised energy solutions to address the energy deficit, especially in underserved rural communities, and to spur socio-economic development.

Salihijo highlighted REA’s expanding partnership portfolio and collaboration with stakeholders along the off-grid energy value chain. He affirmed that the partnership with the Africa Mini-Grid Developers Association represents a significant stride forward for the mini-grid sector in Nigeria.
