Federal Government Promises Healthcare Upgrades


During a recent visit to the Federal Medical Centre in Ebute Metta, Lagos, the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced the Federal Government’s commitment to enhancing healthcare services.

Dr. Alausa lauded the facility for its impressive services, likening it to some of the world’s top healthcare institutions. He commended the management and staff of FMC, Ebute Metta, for their dedicated efforts in providing excellent services at subsidised rates.

Dr. Adedamola Dada, the Managing Director, welcomed the visit as a timely opportunity to address the facility’s weaknesses and challenges. He pointed out that despite having completed necessary infrastructure, the facility faces a shortage of human resources, which has adversely impacted its capacity to provide healthcare services effectively. He expressed optimism about the solutions being considered by Dr. Alausa to bolster the facility’s capabilities.

At the University of Lagos College of Medicine’s 61st Founders Day Lecture and 17th Horatio Oritsejolomi Thomas event, Prof. Oladapo Ashiru emphasised the importance of digital innovation in healthcare. He called on the government to allocate funds for medical research, enact the Nigeria Medical Institute Bill, revive ICT centres, provide Internet of Things (IoT) technology, and upgrade to 5G networks. Ashiru believes that digital innovation, particularly through artificial intelligence, has the potential to revolutionise healthcare delivery.

The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, also stressed the significance of digital health, which encompasses the use of information and communication technologies to manage illness and promote wellness.

Prof. Folashade Ogunsola, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), expressed warm words for Horatio Oritsejolomi Thomas, describing him as a loving and generous individual.

Provost Prof. David Adewale Oke highlighted the college’s longstanding commitment to teaching, research, and service, urging the continuation of the legacy and the advancement of the community.
