NUC Appoints Prof Aremu As Chair Of UNIMED Panel

The National Universities Commission (NUC), Nigeria’s top accreditation authority for universities, appointed a new panel to oversee the accreditation process for the Computer Science Department at the University of Medical Science in Ondo City, Ondo State.

Leading this distinguished panel is Prof Sir Bashiru Aremu, a UNESCO Laureate, and a research professor of Computer Science, Information, and Communication Technology at the Faculty of Computing at Mewar International University, New Karu, Abuja, Nigeria.

Joining him on this panel are Prof Mrs Oluwatolani Achimugu, a Professor of Computer Science at the Air Force Institute of Technology (also known as the Nigeria Air Force University) in Kaduna, Kaduna State, Nigeria, as well as Dr. Ajani, the NUC Representative.

Prof Aremu, celebrated for his UNESCO Laureate status, expressed his gratitude for this appointment and commended the NUC for its leadership in the field of accreditation for the Computer Science and Information Technology Department at the University of Medical Sciences in Ondo City.

This announcement was made on Sunday, October 29, 2023, by Prof Aremu himself in a press statement provided to select journalists in Asaba, Delta State. Notably, this announcement coincided with his active involvement in his role as the Chairman of the Accreditation Panel, underscoring the significance of this appointment.

Prof Aremu also provided insights into the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), highlighting it as a specialised medical institution owned by the Ondo State Government, and accredited by the NUC. UNIMED stands as the third specialised medical university in Africa, and the first in Nigeria to receive NUC accreditation.

In his capacity as a UNESCO Laureate and a distinguished professor at Mewar International University in Abuja, Nigeria, Prof Aremu expressed his appreciation for the NUC’s recognition of his contributions to both national and international education.

The National Universities Commission (NUC) is a key government agency dedicated to promoting the quality of higher education in Nigeria. Situated in Abuja, Nigeria, it was founded in 1962 and has numerous responsibilities: these include approving academic programs at Nigerian universities and overseeing the establishment of higher education institutions offering degree programs.

Prof Sir Bashiru Aremu is a highly respected figure with a global presence and recognition. His notable achievements include being cited in publications such as “Who’s Who in the World” and “Who’s Who in America,” published by Marquis.
