National Strike: Parliamentary Staff Demand Financial Autonomy

Date:

In a nationwide strike, the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) is demanding financial autonomy for state assemblies by the government. Multiple state assemblies are now locked down due to this action, and they will remain so until their demands are met.

Previously, PASAN had issued an ultimatum to President Bola Tinubu to implement financial autonomy for state assemblies, warning of a nationwide strike. The union is also urging state Governors to immediately implement financial autonomy for State Assemblies in line with the 1999 Constitution.

The strike’s impact is visible in states like Abia, Anambra, Kano, Katsina, and Anambra, where state assemblies are effectively shut down.

One of the key reasons for the strike is the lack of a review of conditions of service for parliamentary staff and the non-implementation of the Consolidated Legislative Salary Structure (CONLESS).

In Nasarawa State, PASAN has fully adhered to the nationwide strike order issued by the national body. Mr. Suleiman Oshafu, the Chairman of the union, emphasised the importance of financial autonomy for the State Houses of Assembly in promoting accountability, transparency, and good governance.

Dr. Willie Obiano, the former Governor of Anambra State, had signed a law granting autonomy to the legislature and judiciary to manage their funds. However, the current Governor has not implemented this law, leading to the strike.

PASAN members across the nation have stressed the necessity of financial autonomy for state legislatures, as it is crucial for deepening democracy and maintaining the separation of powers. The strike will continue until their demands are met, they have made known.
