Nigerian Government To Enact AI Regulation

Date:

During the 7th Convocation Ceremony jointly organised by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies, and the University of Benin, in Abuja, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, revealed the National Assembly’s plan to introduce a legislation aimed at regulating Artificial Intelligence (AI). The primary goal of this regulation is to combat identity theft, and address various AI-related challenges.

Speaker Abbas stressed the importance of establishing a regulatory framework to govern emerging technologies within Nigeria. While acknowledging the significant benefits that technologies like AI and robotics offer, he stressed the need to safeguard against potential misuse and abuse.

Furthermore, he highlighted the transformative potential of AI in fields such as healthcare, transportation, manufacturing, and education. Integrating AI into education, in particular, could revolutionise the teaching and learning processes.

Speaker Abbas also acknowledged the potential risks associated with AI, including biases in datasets and algorithms, the automation of routine tasks leading to job displacement, and the rise of identity theft and fraud, often facilitated by AI-generated deep fakes.

In response to these challenges and opportunities, Speaker Abbas expressed the 10th House of Representatives’ commitment to engaging with stakeholders and experts on AI-related issues. Their focus will encompass privacy, accountability, ethics, security, and intellectual property.

He also outlined plans to collaborate with the executive branch to incorporate emerging technologies like AI, robotics, and renewable energy into the school curriculum. As a significant step forward, he announced his intention to introduce a bill for the regulation of AI, making Nigeria one of the pioneering nations in Africa and the globe, in taking legislative action in this field.
