NCC TASKS INVESTORS AS META’S 45,000KM UNDERSEA CABLE COMES TO NIGERIA

Date:

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has reiterated its commitment to supporting law-abiding investors in fostering the nation’s digital economy. Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, assured patriotic investors like Meta (formerly Facebook) of regulatory support, emphasising the necessity of adhering to existing rules and regulations.

The NCC places great importance on compliance with industry laws to ensure a level-playing field for licensees  and stakeholders, fostering healthy competition and overall growth in the sector.

A courtesy visit by Meta’s delegation, led by Vice President  for Africa, the Middle East, and Turkey, Kojo Boakye, aimed to congratulate Dr. Maida on his appointment while highlighting the ongoing efforts to land the 2Africa submarine cable in Nigeria.

Boakye revealed that spanning 45,000 kilometers, the 2Africa cable would be among the world’s largest subsea projects, linking Europe (eastward via Egypt), Asia (via Saudi Arabia), and Africa. This mammoth system, set to go live soon, is designed to deliver an unprecedented capacity of up to 180 terabytes per second (Tbps).

Meta’s plan with 2Africa is to enhance internet capacity and reliability across Africa, addressing the growing demand for connectivity in the Middle East, and supporting the expansion of 4G, 5G, and fixed broadband access; especially in Nigeria.

Boakye sought NCC’s assistance in navigating legal and regulatory procedures to successfully land the submarine cable, aiming to complement Nigeria’s existing backbone infrastructure. Additionally, Meta intends to land the cable simultaneously in Lagos and Akwa-Ibom states, aiming to connect the unconnected, and improve access for those already connected; ensuring enhanced and affordable connectivity for all.
