NIGERIA A MEDICAL TOURIST CENTRE

Date:

Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), addressed Nigerian nurses and midwives in the United Kingdom during the 25th anniversary gala night of the Nigerian Nurses Charitable Association. She spoke on the potential for Nigeria to become a global medical tourist destination. Dabiri-Erewa praised the charitable efforts of these healthcare professionals and encouraged continued contributions to society.

Underlining President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to enhancing healthcare facilities in Nigeria, she called for increased collaboration between Nigerian healthcare practitioners abroad and those in Nigeria. The goal is to establish partnerships focusing on knowledge exchange, telemedicine initiatives, and skill transfer programs.

The UK-based nurses and midwives advocated for a structured Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Nigerian and UK governments regarding the migration of health workers. Wendy Olayiwola, the association’s President, highlighted their dedication to leveraging their expertise by collaborating with medical institutions in Nigeria. She stressed the importance of creating more networking platforms for sharing insights and best practices.

Mayor Micheal Situ of Southwark commended Nigerians in the UK, and pledged effective service to the community. This initiative reflects a broader push for collaborative efforts between healthcare professionals both within and outside Nigeria, aiming to elevate the country’s healthcare system to international standards, and position Nigeria as a hub for medical tourism.
