Prof. Tomori Urges Assessment and Maintenance of COVID-19 Facilities

Date:

Prof. Oyewale Tomori, a Nigerian virologist, and Chairman of the Board of Biovaccines Nigeria Limited, has called for the assessment and maintenance of COVID-19 infrastructures across the country. He said this during an interview yesterday in Abuja.

Prof. Tomori emphasised on the need to take stock of the investments made in response to the COVID-19 pandemic in the country, and further stressed the importance of assessing the current state of COVID-19 investments, specially equipped isolation wards, laboratories, oxygen production factories, etc to determine their functionality across the country.

He highlighted the need for regular provision of funds to cater for the maintenance and continued operation of the facilities, and he proposed integrating the Emergency Operations Centres with existing epidemiology divisions and departments in each state of the federation. He said, “These are sine qua non for effective epidemiological surveillance, early disease detection, reliable laboratory confirmation, and rapid institution of effective response.’’

Prof. Tomori emphasised the importance of prevention over outbreak control, adding that it was more cost-effective to invest in preventive measures and urged all the tiers of government to recognise that eternal vigilance is the price of freedom from disease outbreaks.

“We cannot afford to take our eyes off the surveillance ball; therefore, we must regularly and timely allocate sufficient funds accordingly,” he advised.
