Rivers Assembly Calls For Governor’s Budget Resubmission

During the 90th plenary session, the Rivers House of Assembly passed a resolution on Tuesday, urging Governor Siminalayi Fubara to resubmit the 2024 state budget and medium-term expenditure framework for reconsideration. Speaker Martin Amaewhu, expressing concern over the delayed receipt of these crucial documents from the executive, stressed the imperative for the governor to adhere to constitutional procedures in their presentation.

This request follows Governor Fubara’s swift presentation of a N800 Billion budget on December 13, subsequently signed into law on December 14. However, as part of a peace agreement brokered by President Bola Tinubu, the governor is now expected to re-present the budget to address the ongoing political crisis in the state.

The political landscape is characterised by a fierce battle between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, leading to a divided House of Assembly. The situation escalated, resulting in a failed impeachment attempt, a bombed assembly complex, and subsequent demolition by the state government.

As the state grapples with this political turbulence, the resolution passed by the assembly underscores the urgency of resolving the budgetary issues and restoring stability to the legislative process.
